Blogging tonight from Shelby-Cherryville game 7/24
I'll be relaying the action from game four of the Shelby-Cherryville American Legion Baseball Playoff Series tonight at Veterans Field and Keeter Stadium on my blog. Gametime is 7 p.m.
'Ace' Alan Ford came to The Star in September, 1979, and has been there ever since.
The 1978 University of North Carolina graduate -- who got his nickname from a hole-in-one on the wrong hole at Pine Grove in 1986 -- is a Concord native.
He grew up in the Winecoff community, attending Mt. Olivet Methodist Church, and graduated from Northwest Cabarrus High in 1974.
He is the son of Bill and Mildred Ford and was the third of five sports-loving children in that family.
During his tenure at The Star, he's been honored by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association with the Tim Stevens Award (2007), given for his contributions to high school athletics. He was honored with an endowed scholarship to Cleveland Community College for his many years in the sports writing ranks.
He's been privileged to be part of the Cleveland County Sports Hall of Fame committee, The American Legion World Series organizing committee, and the Board of Directors of the Cleveland County Amateur Golf Tournament. Twice he has served as president of the Shelby Community Lions Club.
